What is sociology?

Understanding perspective:

Thinking about your presentation

Step 1

Perspective
First, read “Understanding the Sociological Perspective.”  Then, journal about YOUR perspective.  Really think about it.  Make sure you define this BEFORE you begin to format your presentation materials.

Research Methodology
Then, OUTLINE, step by step, your research methodology. Why did you choose this topic? What did you do first, second, etc.?  Someone is bound to ask about it.

Step 2
Defining the Problem
Read back through everything—again.  This time, define the problem in your OWN WORDS and then narrow the information down so that it targets the Niskayuna Central School District.

Structuring a Solution
NOW it is time to begin outlining a workable solution to your problem. It must be a solution for Niskayuna (pre-K – 12).  As you begin outlining a solution, be sure to make note of places you still need to research, people you need to interview, and groups you should survey before solidifying your solution.

Use this in your thinking:

How to Ask Sociological Questions

Sociologists seek complex answers to what many would consider simple questions. Berger suggested that there are four key questions at the heart of sociology that allow us to see the connections between everyday life and social structure and forces. They are:
  1. What are people doing with each other here?
  2. What are their relationships to each other?
  3. How are these relationships organized in institutions?
  4. What are the collective ideas that move men [sic] and institutions?
